Global Affairs in 2025: Why do I care about and the next generation
Recently, I have been thinking very much about the actual association of our world. Every decision made by leaders on the other side of the world affects us in one way or another – from economic policies to peace talks and to cultural exchanges. For this reason, it is not only an understanding of the global affairs of diplomats or politicians; It is important for all of us, especially young people who will inherit this complex world.
What are global affairs, however?
Simply put, global affairs revolve around how countries interact – politically, economically, socially and environmental. It covers diplomacy, security, trade, human rights, climate issues and more. It is the network of communications that make up our present and our future.
What happens in the world now?
The year 2025 was full of important global events that show all the challenges and opportunities of international relations:
Big Authority diplomacy: In a very expected development, former US President Donald Trump confirmed a decision with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. This summit aims to negotiate the end of the war in Ukraine, a conflict that has strained international relations for years. Trump has confirmed that Putin is expected to agree to a ceasefire through meeting or facing secondary sanctions, including potentially severe definitions of Russian energy exports. This step is a strategic effort to use economic pressure as well as diplomacy to influence peace, indicating the complex tools used by governments in global affairs.
Regional conflicts: Recently, the security cabinet in Israel has agreed to a controversial plan to control Gaza City, which is likely to replace up to one million people. Antonio Guterres, the Secretary -General of the United Nations, described as a “dangerous escalation” and warned of the human consequences. Countries such as France, the United Kingdom, China, Germany and many Middle East countries have expressed their deep concern about the plan, and urged restraint and dialogue. The situation highlights the fragile balance between security interests and human rights, and reminds us of the continuous complications in political geography in the Middle East.
Economic transformations: Trade tensions continue to form global markets. For example, Indian exporters rush to accelerate shipments to the United States before a 50 % tariff tariff on August 27, 2025. This definition is part of the American secondary sanctions targeting countries with much higher customs duties, affecting trade flows and economic relations. These developments show how commercial policies are economic tools and diplomatic signals.
Human Rights and Freedom: Cultural expression and freedom of expression face challenges all over the world. A recent incident in Thailand included a prominent art exhibition to remove or change the artwork that criticizes China after pressure from the Chinese embassy. The “Conservative Conscience: Imagine the Global Mechanism for authoritarian solidarity” included the exile artists who put Beijing’s treatment of Ouigur, Tibetan and Hong Kong activists. This censorship sparked a condemnation of human rights organizations and confirmed how the authoritarian influence could extend beyond the national borders.
Democratic movements: throughout Africa, citizens in Mali organized widespread protests calling for democratic reforms and ending military rule. These protests have sparked the government’s plan to resolve political parties and extend the presidential term until 2030. The movement attracted international attention as a strong example of people’s desire for transparent governance, human rights and political participation.
Why is this important to me?
As a student who is passionate about international relations, I see global affairs as live classrooms. Where history, politics, economics and human stories intersect. Realizing these issues helps me to better understand the world and prepare me to contribute positively in the future. The European Student Council represents an amazing platform to bring young voices in these important talks, and I am keen to be part of it.
What can young people do?
We may not be global leaders, but we have the power in education, dialogue and activity. By staying aware, participating in discussions, and supporting peace and sustainability initiatives, we can help build bridges across cultures and countries.
Final ideas
Global affairs may seem complicated, but they affect each of us. Identify it is not just an academic exercise – it is a step towards becoming international citizens with knowledge. I am excited to continue to explore this field and contribute to my voice through platforms like the European Student Council.
