Prime minister Justin Trudeau Ottawa struck against the American president on Tuesday Donald TrumpPrices against Canada.
During a press conference held in Ottawa, he called the “very stupid” Washington business action and promised to “retaliate hard” while the country retaliated to try to get the price lifted as soon as possible.
Here is a transcription of his remarks, including the English interpretation where he spoke in French.

Trudeau: So, today, the United States has launched a trade war against Canada, its nearest and ally, their nearest friend. At the same time, they speak of working positively with Russia, soothing Vladimir Putin, a deadly and murderous dictator.
Make it make sense.
The Canadians are reasonable and we are polite, but we will not back up a fight – not when our country and the well -being of everyone are at stake. Currently, the American prices have come into force in the early hours of this morning, just like the Canadian response.
Canada will implement prices of 25% compared to $ 155 billion in American products, starting with prices over 30 billion dollars of goods immediately, and prices on $ 125 billion in remaining American products in 21 days.
Today, we will also contest these illegal actions by fileing claims for settlement of disputes to the World Trade Organization and via the USMCA.
But in the meantime, our prices will remain in place until the American prices are withdrawn and no earlier. And if these prices continue, we are in active and undergoing discussions with the provinces and territories to continue several non -tariff measures, measures that demonstrate that there are no winners in a trade war.
Now, as I did a month ago, I want to speak directly to the American people first.

We don’t want that. We want to work with you as ani and ally, and we don’t want to see you either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. From this morning, the markets have broken down and inflation should increase considerably throughout your country.
Your government has chosen to put American jobs in danger in thousands of workplaces due to Canada materials, or because of consumers in Canada, or both. They have chosen to increase costs for American consumers on essential everyday items such as grocery store and gas, on major purchases such as cars and houses and everything else.

They chose to harm US national security, hampering access to the abundant critical minerals, energy, building materials and fertilizers that we have and that the United States needs to grow and prosper.
They chose to launch a trade war which, first and foremost, will harm American families.
They chose to sabotage their own program which was supposed to inaugurate a new golden age for the United States. And they chose to undermine the incredible work that we have done together to fight against the scourge that is fentanyl, a medication which must be suffered from the surface of the earth.
So, on this point, let me be clear: there is absolutely no justification or need for these prices today. Now the legal pretext that your government uses to bring these prices is that Canada is apparently not willing to help in the fight against illegal fentanyl.
Well, it’s totally false.
Let’s look at the fact that our border is already safe. Many less than one percent of fentanyl flows and less than one percent of illegal passages in the United States come from Canada. But we acted, because we know that we can always do better.
We responded to the concerns, including the president, by implementing an ambitious border plan of $ 1.3 billion, a border plan which includes generational investments in new imaging tools to stop the fentanyl flow in its traces, stronger coordination and sharing of information with American agencies, as well as the deployment of drones, helicopters and additional staff borders.
You know, a month ago, as part of an agreement with the United States which interrupted the prices, we have made new commitments. We have named Kevin Brosseau as our fentanyl tsar, a man who has devoted his career for several decades to the application of laws to combat organized crime networks and drug trafficking.
We have appointed seven drugs of drugs – sick and bad groups that cynically benefit from pain and suffering on both sides of the border – as terrorist organizations they are.
And yesterday, we launched a new joint operations partnership, supported by an investment of $ 200 million between the Canada Security and Application Agencies, a partnership that will improve information and intelligence coordination in order to thwart the criminal gangs involved in the illegal fentanyl trade.
And critically, our actions work like customs and the protection of American borders which have just recognized that there was a 97% drop in the fentanyl crisis in January compared to December to a lower zero of less than half of seized in January.
Now I mean directly to a specific American.
Donald, during the eight years, you and I worked together, we have done great things.
We have signed a historical agreement that has created record jobs and growth in our two countries. We have done great things together on the world scene, as Canada and the United States have done so for decades, for generations. And now we should work together to ensure even greater prosperity for North Americans in a very uncertain and difficult world.
Now it is not in my habit of agreeing with the Wall Street Journal. But Donald, they point out that even if you are a very intelligent guy, he is a very stupid thing to do.
We two friends who beat us is exactly what our opponents around the world want to see.
And now to my Canadian compatriots. I won’t do it sugar. It will be difficult, even if we will all come together because that’s what we do.
We will use all the tools at our disposal so that Canadian workers and companies can resist this storm. The expansion of the benefits of employment insurance and making them more flexible to the supply of direct supports to businesses. We will be there if necessary to help you.
But Canada, don’t be mistaken. No matter how long it lasts, whatever the cost, the federal government and other government orders will be there for you.
We will defend Canadian jobs. We will take measures to prevent predatory behavior that threatens Canadian companies due to the impacts of this trade war, leaving them open to control. We will fight tirelessly to protect our economy. We will defend Canadians every second of every day. Because this country is worth fighting.
You know that we have already gone through difficult places, but each time we have faced long -term chances and apparently insurmountable obstacles, we have not only survived, we have become stronger than ever.
Because when it comes to defending our great nation, there is no price that we do not want to pay.
And today is no different. THANKS.
