Elon Musk said that his social media platform X was struck by a “massive cyber attack” on Monday – but who was behind?

Musk said the IP addresses involved in the attack have been traced to locations “in the Ukraine Area “but a hacking group called Dark Storm Team said he was responsible, in telegram posts now deleted.

Here, Sky News examines what we know of the pirates claiming the responsibility of the attack.

Who is Dark Storm team?

The hacking group was founded in 2023 and orchestrated the cyber attacks against governments and organizations known to support Israel, according to the Cybersecurity Society Check Point.

“They tend to continue these high -level attacks,” said Muhammad Yahya Patel, main security engineer at Check Point.

“Their main mantra is to cause a disturbance of services, largely linked to government relations and NATO.”

The group has previously targeted Israeli Hospitals, American airports, government websites and other critical infrastructure services, according to the safety dashboard of the cybersecurity site.

He added that Dark Storm Team does not tend to demand ransoms after the attacks and that the group focuses on its political motivations.

“We will attack any country (…) which supports the occupying entity,” published the group on Telegram last year, in screenshots shared by the dashboard of security.

However, Dark Storm Team is not completely motivated by political beliefs – she is also announced pirates on behalf of.

“ We have no relation to Ukraine ”

While Musk Linked the cyber attack with IP addresses “in the Ukraine region”, this is disputed.

An article of an X account pretending to be linked to Dark Storm Team read: “According to what Elon Musk said about the cyber attack on the X platform, its source is Ukraine.

“This is an accusation without any evidence, and we have no relationship with Ukraine.”

Cybersecurity experts have also questioned this assertion, saying that it would be unusual that an attack like this comes out of one place.

“IP addresses are (generally) distributed globally from different locations,” said Mr. Patel.

After checking with the Check Point cyber-analyst team, he added: “It looks like a general DDOS attack from different locations, different IP addresses.”

A DDOS attack, or denial of service, is when the hackers flood an attack system from all angles, targeting web servers, internal networks or whatever they can access. The idea is to disrupt the services enough to become unavailable.

After having traveled the web Dark, Mr. Patel’s team also found no one else claiming the responsibility of X’s attack, only Dark Storm Team.

Musk provoked the alarm on Sunday when he said that “the whole front line of Ukraine would collapse if I deactivated him (Starlink) off”.

He made these remarks during an argument with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland for the use of the Musk satellite internet system.

Last year, Ukraine said that around 42,000 internet terminals operated in its soldiers, hospitals, businesses and help organizations.

Musk later said that he “would deactivate the terminals (from Starlink)”.
