Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Archaeologists in Cambodia celebrate an unexpected discovery at the Angkor temple complex in the country of the country: the chest of a Buddha statue which corresponds to a head found almost a century ago on the same site.

The torso, which would have the 12th or 13th century, was discovered during a search by a team of Cambodian and Indian experts last month at the TA PROHM in Angkor. It was found with 29 fragments which seemed to be part of the same statue, said archaeologist Neth Simon this week.

It measures 1.16 meters (3 3/4 feet) in height and is in the art style of Bayon, associated with the temple of the Bayon of Angkor.

“It was a big surprise when we unearthed this sculpture because everything we had found so far was small pieces,” Neth Simon told the Associated Press by phone from the province of Siem Reap.

She described the design of the statue as displaying sculpted jewelry and the dress and belt, with a unique left hands gesture through the chest – “a rare representation in Khmer (Cambodian) art”.

The alleged head of the statue was discovered in the same temple in 1927 in the French colonial era and was currently preserved at the main National Museum of Cambodia in the capital Phnom Penh. Neth Simon said that the chest was found about 50 meters (yards) from the site where the head was discovered, and that an optical electronic scan confirmed that they were a match.

An almost complete reconstruction of the status is possible, added Neth Simon, now that only the right hand of the statue remains missing. His team will ask the Minister of Culture and the Fine Arts of approval to attach the head and body of sculpture to make it whole for public exhibition.
