Juba, South Sudan – The South Sudan government asked civilians on Monday to leave a northern area one day after the army led an air strike against an armed group accused of having exceeded a military base and Attack a United Nations helicopter.
The group’s attacks in the county of Nasir threatened a peace agreement signed in 2018 by President Salva Kiir and its rival president who became vice, Riek Machar, who ended a five -year civil war during which more than 400,000 people were killed.
Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth told journalists that all civilians in a military zone and refusing to leave “will be treated accordingly”.
Lueth confirmed that the army had led an air strike in the county of Nasir on Sunday evening and would continue to do so.
Nasir County Commissioner Gatluak Lew Thiep told local media that more than a dozen civilians had been killed in the air strike.
The army has not confirmed to kill civilians.
Government troops clashed in the county of Nasir with an armed group, known as the White Army, which some believe allies in Machar.
