At least one person died after a car was taken to a pedestrian group in the West German city in Mannheim – with a large police operation in progress.
Several people were “seriously injured” after the black vehicle hit the crowd, according to German police, with a witness saying to Reuters that they had seen people lying on the ground and two in resuscitation.

A suspect was placed in police custody, added the police spokesman Stefan Wilhelm, warning people who live nearby to stay in their homes.
Wilhelm said that “the incident” took place on Monday around 12:15 pm in a pedestrian part of the Mannheim Paradeplatz region.
“We can confirm that an author has been arrested,” he said. “We cannot yet give information on the question of whether there were other authors.”
A spokesperson for the German Ministry of the Interior said: “The emphasis is now on the safeguard of lives, the treatment of the wounded and the initial investigations of the authorities in Mannheim.”

Police described it as “a deadly deployment situation”, affirming in a first declaration: “Currently, a police operation takes place in the city center of Mannheim, in the Wasturm / Plankenkopf area.
“The police and rescuers are on the way. More information is not yet available. In this context, there may be temporary traffic disturbances in the city center.”
An alert was made on the Katwarn smartphone application – used in major emergencies – telling the people of Mannheim to avoid the city center due to a large deployment of the police.
The Mannheim University Hospital said that it was prepared for a possible “mass victims incident”, by implementing its disaster and emergency plan, and to increase intensive care capacity, according to the German news agency DPA.
In total, eight trauma teams have been made available – for adults and children, according to the agency.
“The postponable operations that had not yet started were immediately removed from the operating plan to create an additional operating capacity,” the hospital said in a statement.
Crowds have gathered in cities in Germany, including its region in Rhineland, for parades to mark the carnival season.
The police were very alert after social media accounts linked to Islamic extremist groups called on attacks on events provided in Cologne and Nuremberg.
Today’s incident has followed other similar in recent weeks, including a Dead car attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg in December and Another in Munich last month.
Mannheim has 326,000 inhabitants and is around 80 kilometers south of Frankfurt.
