Demokraatit won 29.9% of the votes by campaigning to improve housing and education standards while delaying independence until Greenland is self -sufficient. Four years ago, the party finished in fourth place with 9.1%.

Anthon Nielsen, a Nuuk resident, said that party’s victory would be good for the country.

“Most politicians want Greenland to be independent,” he said. “But this party that has won, they don’t want to hurry up things, so everything must be done well.”

Carina Ren, head of the Arctic Program of Aalborg University in Copenhagen, said the results show that the Greenlanders have tried to ignore Trump and focus on important questions for them.

“Voters were able to train the whole drama, all the alarmist speeches from the outside to say:” Well, it is our daily life, our daily concerns as citizens. Where are we going, how are we going to develop our interior society. »»

Demokraatit will now have to pay attention to the formation of a power coalition.

Naleraq, the most aggressively pro-independence party, finished second, with 24.5% of the vote. He was followed by Inuit Ataqatigiit, who led the last government, at 21.4%.

“What an approach to independence will earn the day will finally depend on if Demokraatit decides to form a coalition government, and if so, with what party,” said Dwayne Menezes, Director General of the Research and Polar Politics initiative.
