Military leaders around the world will meet next week to discuss the “operational phase” of the protection of Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force, said Sir Keir Starmer.
The Prime Minister organized a virtual meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” on Saturday, which involved leaders of 26 nations, including Ukraine, as well as the EU and NATO, to discuss the end of the war in Ukraine.
Speaking after the 90 -minute meeting, Sir Keir revealed that the military leaders of the Western nations group would meet on Thursday while they were playing “in an operational phase”.
He said they would establish plans to help secure Ukraine “on land, sea and heaven” if a peace agreement can be agreed with Russia.
Ukraine War Last: We must be ready to defend the peace agreement
The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accepted a proposal for an intermediate ceasefire of 30 days like Russia accepted the end of the fightingHowever, President Vladimir Putin said that “many questions” remain on the proposals.
In particular absent from the call on Saturday, American president Donald Trump, but Sir Keir reiterated that any peace contract requires an American security net.
He said that the United Kingdom speaks in the United States “on a daily basis” and that there is a “collective resolution” to end the war, which has been demonstrated by “the momentum that we now devote” by the many allied countries “over the same wavelength” both politically and militarily.
He said that the meeting by the military leaders on Thursday “is an operational planning meeting”.
The PM added that the “coalition of willingly” had increased in size since the leaders met for the first time a little less than two weeks ago in Lancaster House in London.
Answer a question from Sky News’ Deputy political editor Sam Coates On the rules of engagement for troops on the ground in the context of a peacekeeping process, Sir Keir said that the meeting will state this.
He said he had already indicated that he wanted the United Kingdom “to play a leading role” in the supply of troops and air power, while other countries will have different capacities.
But, he said that a peace agreement must be concluded first, which requires more pressure on Russia.
“If there is going to be lasting peace, there must be security provisions,” said the Prime Minister, noting that Putin previously broke a peace agreement with Ukraine.
Sir Keir also declared on the call that the rally of leaders had rejected the approach “yes, but” of Mr. Putin, in reference to the Russian president saying that he would accept a cease-fire, but there must be a “study” in his appearance.
The Prime Minister said: “The world needs action, not a study, not empty words and conditions. So my message is very clear. Sooner or later, Putin will have to come to the table.
“It is therefore the moment when the guns are tested, that the barbaric attacks against Ukraine stop once and for all and accept a cease-fire now.”
President Zelenskyy revealed that he had addressed Reunion and told them that the way to peace “should start unconditionally” and if Russia does not want to do this “, then strong pressure must be applied until they do it”.
He said that the 30-day ceasefire proposal for Americans merchanting in Saudi Arabia with the Russians has been on the table since Tuesday, but accused Mr. Putin of “lying to everyone” of the situation on the ground and the way a cease-fire is “so-called too complicated”.
The Ukrainian leader begged the West to “define a clear position on security guarantees” and for European nations to invest in defense so that the continent has “its own arsenals and the ability to produce the most advanced weapons” and strengthen air defense.
The leaders involved in the call on Saturday came from: Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Spain, Sweden Ukrain, Ukrain, Ukrain and UK.
NATO secretary general, Mark Rutte, the chairman of the EU commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the EU council, Antonio Costa, also joined.
